Genetically Engineered 'Mighty Mouse' Can Run 6 Kilometers Without Stopping, Ukyla Johnson

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/11/071101162739.htm-

They use mainly the fatty acids for energy and produce very very small amounts of lactic acid. They also eat 60 percent more althought they remain fit, leaner, and breed longer than the wild mice in the controled group. Some female mice have children when they are only 2.5 years old. That's amazing since they don't have children after they are one year old.

What process is being used in the article?
They had over expressed the gene for enzyme phosphoenolypyruvate carboxykinases(PEPCK-C).

What is the purpose of genetic engineering in this article?
The purpose of them doing all this is to understand the metabolic and physiological function of (PEPCK-C) in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue.

List three things you learned from this article in your own words.
I learned that they were studying the rats before they expressed the gene. They found out that some of them had higher levels of that particular gene because they were more active. They also found out that they where really more aggrissive.

What impact would the absence of this process have on humanity?
We wouldn't have understood clearly why some people are able to do things for long periods of time without stopping. We wouldn't have also known that this gene is somewhat mainly the cause for it.
