Organic Farming Beats No-Till?

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/07/070722162434.htm

Summary:Researchers was surprised to find out that organic farming was a better soil builder than no-till.No-till has always been thought to be the best soil builder because it eliminates plowing and minimizes even light tillage to avoid damaging organic matter and exposing the soil to erosion. They also showed light-tillage organic corn, soybean and wheat with the same crops with no-till.

Organic Molecules

What is the major role of this molecule in the cell? It regenerates and make it stronger

List three things you learned from this article in your own words. It helped the soil and also produced better crops.

What impact would the absence of this molecule have on the cell? The farmers would lose money and the crops would also go bad.

New Insight Into HIV Infection

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/05/070504131255.htm

Summary:When HIV infects the cell it carries its DNA into the nucleus of the cell then the viral DNA mixes with the cell's DNA. Also the combined DNA makes proteins that make new viruses.A scientist studied how various cellular proteins help the virus enter the infected cell's nucleus. The study also showed that by silencing genes that produce one of these proteins,HIV was three time sless infectious than when the protein was present.
Cell Organelles

What is the major function of this cell's organelle? To carry the DNA of the cell and instructions of the cell

Which cell types have this organelle?Eukaryote cells

List three things you learned from this article in your own words. I learned that HIV spreads by making proteins that infects the cell.

What impact would the absence of this organelle have on the cell? The cell would not function or have codes for the DNA structure.

Climate change is killing US forests

http://www.newscientist.com/channel/life/mg19526224.600-climate-change-is-killing-us-forests.html

Summary:In the Sierra Nevad mountains the climate chande is eroding the health of pine and fir trees. Ecologists have been tracking the fate or more than 21,ooo trees. Scientists looked at the first 22 years of a record, and they noticed that mortality rates of both pine and fir trees had increased. The rate at which new trees established did not change.

Ecology

What kind of relationship is being described in the article? The trees are thre life of the Sierra Nevava Mts.

Describe the niche being discussed in the article.the trees are bing killed and not replenessed

List three things you learned from this article in your own words.Humans re killing trees, ecology, and the life of the mt.

What impact would the topic of the article have on the biosphere? The Earth will get hotter and there will be even less oxygen.

'Quiet Revolution' May Herald New RNA Therapeutics

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/01/070121162811.htm

Summary: RNA plays an important role in synthesis in proteins and the building blocks in our bodies. The Human Genome Project identified about 34,000 genes responsible for producing proteins.Scientists have begun to see 'junk' DNA as having a very important function. Also the DHFR gene produces an enzme that controls thymine production, necessary in rapidly dividing cells. It also could help prevent the growth of neoplastic cancerous cells.

DNA/ RNA

What are the major functions of nucleic acids in the cell?

What are the differences in RNA and DNA?

List three things you learned from this article in your own words.

What impact would the absence of this organelle have on the cell?

Climate Change Predicted To Drive Trees Northward

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071203090131.htm

Summary:In North America climate is expected to change this century that could cause ranges to shift northward and shrink them about half.ranges may decrease sharply if trees cannot disperse in altered conditions. Two climate change scenarios were modeled. One assumed that carbon dioxide emissions would start to decrease during the coming century.

Climate Change

What are some ways this phenomenon could be stopped? By keep doing experiments or methods to stop it but trees do that.

Is there anything you could do to contribute to the reversal. No

List three things you learned from this article in your own words.that trees can move and respond to the climate. I also learned that cliamte also has a bid affect on trees and the way the move.

What impact would the continuance of these process have on the biosphere? That the trees wil start decreasing.

Photosynthesis

http://www.sciencedaily.com/articles/p/photosynthesis.htm

Summary: Photosynthesis is the synthesis of sugar from light, carbon dioxide and water, with oxygen as a waste product. It is the most important biochemical pathway that all life depends on. Most plants are photoautotrophs which means they are able to synthesize food from inorganic molecules to light energy. Photosynthesis occurs in algae, plants, and some bacteria.

Photosynthesis

What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?6CO2 + 6H2O ------> C6H12O6 + 6O2

What organelles are involved in this process? Chloroplast

List three things you learned from this article in your own words.I learned that plants make sugar, oxygen, and use light for energy.

What impact would the absence of this process have on the biosphere?Plants will start dying and life on Earth would not be the same.

Heatwave is a hell for threatened bats

http://environment.newscientist.com/article/mg19626323.200-heatwave-is-a-hell-for-threatened-bats.html

Summary: It has been a disaster for flying foxes because at least 3500 fruit bats dropped dead from heat exhaustion as temperatures in Australia's eastern coast rose to almost 43 celsius. Students from the Universitity of Ulm in Gernmany have been analyzing the affects of the temperature and the survival of the bats. The killing of the fruit bats will have a serious knock-on effects in U.S.

Endangered species
Why is this species endangered? because of the extreme hot temperatures
What could prevent this organism from going extinct? by moving to another environment if necessary
List three things you learned from this article in your own words.I learned what hot temperature can do to some species and cause flyinf foxes to starve because they eat fruit bats.
What impact would the absence of this organism have on its ecosystem/community? Will cause species to start decreasing.

Patients With Mild Cushing Syndrome May Benefit From Adrenalectomy

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071208143055.htm

Summary:The disorder called "Cushing Syndrome" is caused by an adrenal tumor. It occurs when the body's tissues are expossed to excessive levels of cortisol. People with dis disorder have upper body obesity with increaded fat around the face and neck. "Cushing Syndrome may affect 1 in every 1,000 people in the population",Dr.Auchus said.

Human Disease
1.What are the symptoms of this disease?have upper body obesity, increased fat around the neck and face, diabetes, hypertension, thin skin, muscle weakness, and bruises and fatigue may occur
2.How is this disease passed from person to person? through your genes
3.List three things you learned from this article in your own words. I learned how cushing syndrome can cause the body to change and caused obesity. I also learned that it can be passed on through the genes of the body and cause tumors or even diabetes. I also learned that to get your bllod tested would be a great idea so you can know ahead of time if cushing sydrome in your blood.
4.What impact does this disease have on the US economy? It will cause more people to die and become so fat. We should just watch the symptons and cortisol.
