Unraveling The Physics Of DNA's Double Helix
link:http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/07/070712134533.htm
Summary:Each DNA strand includes a sugar and phosphate "backbone" attached to one of four bases, which encode genetic sequences. The strength of the interactions within individual strands comes largely from the chemical attraction between the stacked bases. But the integrity of double-stranded DNA depends on both the stacking forces between base units along the length of the double helix and on the pairing forces between complementary bases, which form the rungs of the twisted ladder.

DNA/RNA
Polymerase Mu Is a DNA-Directed DNA/RNA Polymerase :DNA polymerases are defined as such because they use deoxynucleotides instead of ribonucleotides with high specificity. We show here that polymerase implicated in the nonhomologous end-joining pathway for repair of DNA double-strand breaks, incorporates both ribonucleotides and deoxynucleotides in a template-directed manner. We therefore addressed the impact of ribonucleotide incorporation on the activities of factors required for double-strand break repair by nonhomologous end joining. We determined that the ligase required for this pathway readily joined strand breaks with terminal ribonucleotides. Most significantly frequently introduced ribonucleotides into the repair junctions of an in vitro nonhomologous end-joining reaction an activity that would be expected to have important consequences.
What are the major functions of nucleic acids in the cell? Nucleic acid is made of alternating sugar and phosphate molecules bonded together in a long chain.

Stretching DNA To The Limit, Ukyla Johnson

DNA strands elasticity is altered by being exsposed toUV light. The small changes in cross linking can very profoundly affect the ability of DNA to recognize specific molecules. It can disrupt its ability to replicate and interact with transcriptional machinary to sythesize proteins. The collegues found out that the viral DNA exposed to UV light are due to the local unwinding of the double helix in some regions arising form the massive formation of crosslinked structures.
What are the major functions of nucleic acids in the cell? The major function of nucleic acid is to store information need for the cell.
What are the differences in RNA and DNA? RNA is a nucluic acid composed of a single strandand distinguished from DNA by comtaining ribose and uracil. DNA is hereditary info in the form of a large moleculecalled deoxyribonucleic acid.
List three things you learned from this article in your own words.I learned that they had examined synthetic DNA to to figure out the limit to which diffrent bases are affected by UV light. I also learned that these were the first measurements that establish a relationship between DNA nanomechanics and damage. One of the colluges belived this paves the way for streach release for spectroscope measurments in DNA dianostics.
What impact would the absence of this organelle have on the cell?If they didn't have the DNA in this, there would be nothing to cause people to get skin cancer from the UV light distorting it.

Summary: RNA plays an important role in synthesis in proteins and the building blocks in our bodies. The Human Genome Project identified about 34,000 genes responsible for producing proteins.Scientists have begun to see 'junk' DNA as having a very important function. Also the DHFR gene produces an enzme that controls thymine production, necessary in rapidly dividing cells. It also could help prevent the growth of neoplastic cancerous cells.

Stretching DNA To The Limit
Link- http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070424091417.htm
Summary- It has long been known that UV light can damage DNA, reducing its ability to replicate and interact with proteins, and often resulting in the development of skin cancers. However, not much is known about how the elasticity of DNA strands is altered upon exposure to UV light. Now a group of researchers at Duke University have developed a method to measure changes in the mechanical properties of DNA upon irradiation with UV light.

Nanoelectrodes could provide bird flu test
Link:http://technology.newscientist.com/channel/tech/dn12999-nanoelectrodes-could-provide-bird-flu-test.html
Summary: The article opens describing finding the presence of specific genes could be as as hard as finding a needle in a haystack but new technology could put an end to that. To do this they wire a DNA strand up to a pair of nanotube electrodes and feed electricity through it. Since DNA with non matching base pairs lets considerably less current flow through it than a pair of matching strands, so they can use this to find certain genes.
What are the major functions of nucleic acids in the cell? To carry genetic information or form structures within the cell.
What are the differences in RNA and DNA? RNA is single stranded while DNA is double, while DNA contains deoxyribose, RNA contains ribose.
List three things you learned from this article in your own words. Electricity can be used to find certain genes, a 27 nm gap is the length of a segment of 80 base pairs of DNA, DNA with non-matching base pairs lets considerably less current flow through it than a pair of matching strands.
What impact would the absence of this organelle have on the cell? Cells woudlnt be able to carry any information to their host.

DNA/RNA: Silenced genes can no longer stay hidden
Link: http://www.newscientist.com/home.ns
Summary: DNA have recently been hidden leaving scientist with no way to find out more information about a certain disease. Now, however, a program has been designed to help scientist defeat the hidden DNA. The program teaches itself how to recognize the DNA patterns in silenced genes. As mammals, we have two copies of genes; one from the mother and the other from the father. When one of the genes are occasiopnally silenced it is recessive and can lead to diseases. The invention of this new DNA program is a helpful tool for scientist to help the human nature.

List three things you learned from this article in your own words.
1. Scientist have found a new program to further their knowledge of the impact of DNA on human diseases.
2.Some genes can be hidden or recessive
3.The recessivness of a gene may lead to diseases
What impact would the absence of this organelle have on the cell? Essential information would not get into the brain and the body would not function correctly.
