Summary: A semiconductor membrane designed by people at the University of Illinois could offer more flexibility. Also could make better electrical performance than biological membranes. It was built from thin silicon layers covered with different things. The solid membrane also could be used in applications such as singlemolecule detection, protein filtering and DNA sequencing.

Questions:
  1. Which components of the cell membrane are being discussed in the article?
  2. What is the purpose of the process or component in the article? to make electrical performance better.
  3. List three things you learned from the article in your own words. It made better flexibility. Electrical performance was better. It could also be used for detection.
  4. What impact would the absence of this organelle/process have on the cell? nothing would ne protecting the things inside of the membrane.

Phospholipids In The Cell Membrane Help Regulate Ion Channels

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/02/070227214350.htm

Summary: Even though the cell membrane is a protective barrier, it also is important for letting some unknown material in. They come in through ion channels that are on the cells surface. The cell membrane is home to different protein.

Which components of the cell membrane are being discussed in the article? Phospholipids

What is the purpose of the process or component in the article. To help the channel function

List three things you learned from the article in your own words.
1.) The cell membrane is the outer part of the cell.
2.) It serves as a protective barrier.
3.) It is home of proteins.

What impact would the absence of this organelle/process have on the cell? Harmful materials can get in your cells

Phospholipids In The Cell Membrane Help Regulate Ion Channels

Summary: Within the cell membrane is a protective barrier, that plays a role in letting some foreign material in the cell. The cell membrane is a specialized environment, it is home to many proteins that enable the cell to interact with the environment. One family of protein is the ,Voltage gated Channels, they are especially important in the conducting signals along and between nerve cells. By opening when they sense a change in the electric field these channels cause ions to rush in or out of the cell, conveying messages.

Questions:
Which components of the cell membrane are being discussed in the article? The Phosophlipids

What is the purpose of the process or component in the article. How the phosplipds allow particles to enter or leave the cell.

List three things you learned from the article in your own words. I learned that phosophlipids were in the cell membrane. I learned that the cell membrane is home to a variety of proteins. I learned that proteins with the cell membrane enable the cell to interact with it's enviroment.

What impact would the absence of this organelle/process have on the cell? The cell would be suseptible to foreing object both harmful and beneficial.

Biologists Prove Critical Step In Mebrane Fusion

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070417154344.htm

Summary: The article was talking about how membrane fusion is an important step for the passing of items between two cells. The article said membrane fusion is how HIV infect cells. So Membrane fusion is important because of what it can pass on to you.

Questions: Which components of the cell membrane are being discussed in the article? The whole cell membrane itself.
What is the purpose of the process or component in the article. The proces is important because it is the cause of you having HIV and other diseases or isn't.
List three things you learned from the article in your own words. That HIV is passed during this process, that the membrane allows deadly items into your cells sometimes, and that the process in the article is called membrane fusion.
What impact would the absence of this organelle/process have on the cell? the cell would be unprotected from outside diseases and invaders. The cell would eventually die.

Summary: This article talks about membrane fusion. It also talks about how membrane fusion works and how it can be done. It also talks about how membrane works and how it fuses and affects cells.

Questions: Which components of the cell membrane are being discussed in the article?
What is the purpose of the process or component in the article. It is to inform you about membrane fusion and how it works and affects the cell.
List three things you learned from the article in your own words. 1. I learned about membrane fusion and how it works. 2. I learned how membrane fusion can affect a cell. 3. I learned about some of the dideases that are cause by membrane fusion.
What impact would the absence of this organelle/process have on the cell? It causes the cell to mutate and spread very quickly. Membrane fusion is also how HIV is spreaded, because the cell mutates and spreads to othr parts of the body quick.
